The Deck Builders Association of Utah is a collaborative community of professional deck builders, contractors, and industry experts dedicated to elevating the quality of outdoor living across the state.
I was born in Sacramento, California, and spent my early years moving between Washington, Oregon, and West Valley City, Utah. During my youth, I lived in a small town in Peru, South America, where I completed seventh and eighth grade and became fluent in Spanish. Because there was no American high school nearby, I attended boarding school—first in Arizona, then finishing my junior and senior years at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah.
After graduating, I moved to San Francisco and spent three years working in landscaping before returning to Sacramento. In 2002, I joined the Carpenters Union Local 46, where I specialized in installing architectural woodwork. I worked on high-end projects including casinos, libraries, hospitals, hotels, and airports, focusing on detailed finish carpentry.
In 2012, I moved back to Utah. After two years, I decided to make it my permanent home, earned my contractor’s license, and founded JV Custom Decks. Since starting the company, I’ve built a reputation for quality craftsmanship and service. My work has earned multiple industry awards, including recognition from Trex, where one of my decks was featured in their sales kit for over five years. I’ve also received the Trex Stellar Service Award.
Today, I lead over 10 crews and continue to expand JV Custom Decks across Utah—from Payson to North Ogden and into Park City and Midway—providing high-quality outdoor living spaces at a fair price. I love what I do!
